Chad Flake papers, 1949-2003.

This collection houses Flake's family history research, Flake's personal collection of quotes, personal papers, and scriptural research. The collection also contains copies of news articles pertaining to Flake's terms as an officer in historical societies and the Utah Library Association, and pertaining to donations, acquisitions, and feature articles on the Special Collections section of the Harold B. Lee Library. There are several certificates recognizing Flake's awards and honors. The collection contains Flake's Brigham Young University salary papers from 1960-1994. These papers are restricted until the year 2028. Also included in the collection is a variety of photos (mostly unidentified) from Chad's life including the following: 131 British mission (1949-1951) photos, 9 graduation photos, 21 family and childhood photos, 27 post-mission/career/travel photos. In the collection are the original bound drafts of Flake's A Mormon Bibliography 1830-1930. There are 8 bound portions to the original draft of the bibliography. The last item is a landscape painting that hung in Flake's office in Special Collections. Although the first known collection date is 1949, the collection holds a few undated photos that were taken before 1949.

Chad John Flake was born December 28, 1929 in Snowflake, AZ. He served a mission in the British Isle from 1949 to 1951. He attended Northern Arizona University and Brigham Young University. He was hired at Brigham University as General Reference Librarian and finished his career at Brigham Young University as Curator of Special Collections. Mr. Flake passed away on June 18, 2003. Plans for the David O. McKay building began in 1952 after an evaluation by the Brigham Young University College of Education concluded that the existing building for the College of Education were no longer meeting the growing needs of the program. Plans were officially announced in February of 1954 with the completion deadline being set for December of the same year.
